NHL 2K
03/18/2000

The first hockey game to grace the Dreamcast isn’t that bad at all. But it isn’t NFL2K, and I don’t mean in the type-of-sport sense, but rather everything that NFL 2K had that NHL 2K didn’t.
The graphics were nice and they took the time to make the audience much more realistic looking. Or at least to the extent a game player notices the audience that is. My only annoying gripe with this is when I’m on a break away and I’ve got a computer that caught up with me this little window pops up with the computer calling a defensive tactic leaving me totally unable to see where or what I’m doing until I run smack into the goalie. Luckily it doesn’t happen too often. But you’ll notice it.
The sound is “blah” in this game. No goal horns, very annoying commentary: “Lindros passes to Leclair. Leclair passes to Lindros. Lindros shoots. Leclair recovers the puck and passes it to Lindros” but you get the point. And for crying out loud, when my team (home team and you guess who by the quote above) scored I sounded more excited then the crowd did. That’s kind of sad when you think about if they made it a bit louder it would have been great.
The game does have all the NHL teams so you take them all to the Stanley Cup which will take a while. But besides that this game is VERY skimpy on options and different modes to use. Which is really disappointing but nothing to make you not want to buy it. The game play is nice and smooth with no slow down or pop up except for that defensive strategy change. But I can ignore it and crush their guy who tries to score and then 3-on-1 their goalie.
The bottom line on this game is if you want a hockey game that has a season mode and doesn’t suck, then I strongly suggest you check this game out. But if your looking for something with depth and tons of modes to use, then wait for whenever the next hockey game comes out.
Whenever that will be, unless it’s another NHL 2K+1 or whatever they’ll call it.
